It is estimated that there are at least 60 types of synesthesia; most likely there are far many more. However, of this multitude of types, only about six types gain the focus of almost all research: grapheme-based synesthesia; phoneme to color synesthesia; synesthesia induced by time units; lexico-gustemic synesthesia; general sound-to-color synesthesia; and musical tone to color synesthesia. This, in part, is justified by the rarity of most other types of synesthesia – it has been difficult in the paso colors” (i.e., “auras”), to name but a few. Views of these other types will come, in part, from correspondences to the Synesthesia List over the past 20 years, along with more recent postings to FaceBook groups and other on-line communities. One of our goals is to question and examine what the full range of synesthesiae might be. Another goal is to discuss how we might now be able to gain some of these rare, more diverse synesthetes as research participants, such as expanding on-line communities.

Yet, this limited focus on only certain types of synesthesia has led many researchers to (sometimes drastic) over-generalizations, and perhaps misconceptions, about what synesthesia is, how it works, what it is like to experience it, and its causation(s). Here, we look at many of the other types of synesthesia, exploring what new insights might be gained, and considering new lines of questions and experiments. This would include such types as “flavors to musical chords”, “emotions to flavors”, “kinetics to sounds”, and “personalities
